IoT Innovation: New wireless technologies for energy management
Improving wireless communication has enabled the development of a large selection of affordable devices for use in all aspects of our lives, such as smart devices in our homes, smart personal devices (fitness watches, smart watches, connectable cameras, etc.), infrastructure management in the industry, automatisation of factories, robotics, new devices in medicine and healthcare, the inclusion of elderly people in the connected society and the like.
The options are endless for the IOP network energy systems, such as power systems, gas networks, district heating systems, and other energy distribution systems. Network owners and operators manage a large number of devices and facilities whose status affects the operation and consequently quality and continuous production and energy supply. With the effective new wireless technologies, one of which is LoRa, the status of these devices and facilities can be monitored long distance and in large numbers. Monitoring and management devices can be battery powered due to low power consumption, meaning that they can be installed even in places previously impossible. An interconnection network is based on LoRa radio wireless communications that connects the powered or battery-powered wireless sensors and meters to a network server. There, the energy and energy data management system represents the platform for data access through the user portal, analytics and a reporting system while allowing the development of new services, such as connecting alarm devices and the like.
LoRaWAN enables wireless networking of sensors and devices at longer distances as does the mobile network, and it has extremely low power consumption, which makes it a new generation of powerful battery packs for a new generation of devices that can function for five years or more. A new wireless network must be established for the operation. The price of the set up and network operation is quite low, since the radio frequency spectrum of 868 Mhz is used and it does not require concession payments, as is the case with mobile networks. While it is true that data can be transmitted only for a short time and not continuously due to the free use of radio frequencies, this also means that such network is ideal for the transmission of short blocks of data. The devices can be battery powered and thus installed in various locations without energy supply. Data can now be captured that was previously unconnectable due to access restriction or wiring, considering the solution’s significantly lower cost.
This method opens up many options for energy data capture and management, and consequently new energy management solutions and optimisation.
Solvera Lynx will present some of these wireless solutions, namely the established solutions based on the LoRaWAN technology for energy management in the harsh industrial environments of Cement Steel and Glass factories, and additional options of use for wireless technologies different facilities.

IoT Innovation: Open markets of IoT services and the emergence of the Sentient Web
Much of the potential of the IoT will be realised through value-added services, but this is being held back by fragmentation and limited interoperability. W3C is addressing this through developing web standards for things that decouple applications from the underlying IoT technologies. Applications will no longer need to be developed around the details of the myriad IoT technologies and standards. This means that developers can create applications more easily, with less effort, especially, when combining IoT devices from different ecosystems. W3C’s standards further enable suppliers and consumers of services to agree on the meaning of the data they exchange through rich semantic descriptions of the kinds of things, their capabilities and relationship to the environment in which they reside. This is based upon W3C’s framework for graph data and paves the way to the emergence of the Sentient Web – ecosystems of services with awareness based upon sensors, and reasoning based upon graph data and rules, together with graph algorithms and machine learning.
