Day 1

29 November 2017

Developing for the IoT

“What’s the best way to build “Internet of Things software” that could do anything from control home appliances remotely, to inform an aero-engine manufacturer that one of its engines somewhere in the world needs servicing, to gather meteorological data from sensors to produce a weather forecast? What skills are needed to do so? Where do you even begin?” – CIO.com
Day One of the Developing for the IoT agenda will explore the evolving technology available to developers looking to create IoT products and software. Reviewing platforms and frameworks for development, hardware and connectivity options and also the tools needed to create products and applications for the IoT.

Connected devices are becoming increasingly complex often supporting multiple wireless protocols and sensors. Testing these systems can be time-consuming and costly without the right knowledge, expertise and tools. What testing is required to verify that the product meets industry standards and government regulations? How does testing differ for non-cellular compared to cellular devices? What specific design and test challenges are you likely to encounter when bringing an IoT device to market? Product testing is considered a major barrier to launching new products and many companies do not have the necessary expertise, especially in wireless testing. How do we for example ensure that a device complies with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi standards?

According to Gartner (2017), the Internet of Things market is expected to grow from 8.4 Billion connected devices in 2017 to around 20.4 Billion by 2020. The key to the success of many of these Things is mobility. Many enterprises and their service providers might still believe their IoT needs are national or regional, but mobile industrial/commercial and consumer devices tend not to stay inside national borders. Then there are the IoT service providers, who need to support global activations from the start. Service providers have tried to find ways to shrink their coverage gaps. Among them are options of building their own global MNO relationships for IoT roaming; and joining international IoT alliances. The former requires much work and has country-level complications; the latter can require buy-in to a specific platform. Both approaches can leave sizable holes for global coverage.

In his presentation, Ajay Joseph, Chief Technical Officer of iBasis, will go into the pain points of MNOs and IoT Service Providers as well as solutions to consider, when it comes to worldwide support in Global Mobile Access for Things. His presentation will cover:

  • The explosion of Things and the need for these Things be connected across borders
  • The (r)evolution of SIM technology: the eSIM and the support in footprint expansion
  • eSIM security and the importance of tackling the end-to-end risks at an early stage
  • The significance of partnerships for global mobility and access

In the last few years, IoT hype has been overwhelming. We’ve been inundated by technology messages and predictions about billions of connected devices and trillions of dollars of economic opportunity. While all true, IoT is not really about those things. It is about front-line people and processes using IoT technology to create new business outcomes. It is about the journey of thousands of organizations already leveraging IoT to optimize their operations, introduce disruptive business models and discover new revenue streams.

In this talk, the speaker provides a proven step-by-step guide for organizations in most any industry to start and scale their own IoT journey. Drawing on his recent New York Times Best Seller, “Building the Internet of Things,” the author and Cisco executive shares eight key ingredients for any successful IoT implementation, four fast paths to payback, several business case studies, common deployment mistakes, and practical best practices. He will get past the hype and illustrate how to capture the full value of IoT today.

Organizations today recognize the importance of connectivity to meet customer demand and maintain a competitive edge. From Smart Buildings to connected cars to our next-generation cities, connectivity powers the future. Unfortunately, it also enables how malware, ransomware and other threats spread. As connected devices proliferate, hackers are offered more openings and more vulnerabilities to exploit. This is especially true for devices on the edge. With the cross-contamination of connected devices, threats easily cross boundaries of the connected home and the connected building into industry, affecting transportation, threatening mobile devices and ultimately damaging the enterprise.

So how do we develop an IoT product to live, and survive, in this world? Security strategists need to think like a hacker, developing IoT security strategies from the beginning that factor in the full threat landscape from a hacker’s point of view and continuously progress a security strategy that is always moving protection forward. By putting themselves in the shoes of an attacker and protecting against cyberattacks targeting devices on the edge, many organizations have developed a long-term secure strategy for their IoT product.

This session will start with a view of the hackers’ business model, explore how hackers operate and provide an analysis of how threats spread in the current connected landscape. What are hackers after? How do they gain access despite sound security measures being in place? This discussion will answer those questions and highlight the importance of developing a multi-layered cybersecurity strategy in disrupting a hacker’s business model, making it difficult to reverse engineer your security strategy and exploit vulnerabilities introduced through connected devices on the edge.
